Sunday I went for a back-to-back dose at the Black Cat. This time it was the Backstage, where Calvin Johnson was the headliner. We got there early to see the opener, who, it turns out, was the singer from Eric's Trip, a now defunct 90s band I actually just got turned on to. Then Calvin, whose performance was incredibly sincere. The guy is like James Earl Jones with a guitar with that voice. And I realized I got my first Calvin Johnson album, in the form of Beat Happening, 17 years ago. I'm old, people.
Last night it finally happened: I saw Cocksucker Blues. I'm sure you all read the wiki entry for that shizz as I told you to months ago. Well, what can I say about this movie. Cameos galore, like Muddy Waters, Stevie Wonder, Andy Warhol, and many, many others. Some live clips, of course, from a great band firing on all cylinders. And some backstage and offstage footage that shows the band and their entrourage partying like the professionals you know they are. We wondered if the film would ever see the non-bit torrent light of day. Probably not on the tip of the Stones' minds. Too many needles. And Mick doing coke off a switchblade is probably not something he wants hitting the big screen. And the volume of discharge in that one scene? Oh my.
