Roap trip +

A week in the car without Sirius or XM? Oh no!

Here is something approaching the playlist, certainly not in order. I just pulled two books of CDs, not much in the recent playlist. We also hit up Sonic Boom in Toronto. Currently listening to the new M.I.A. album. Before many but certainly not most had heard of her, several months before her album was released, my man Sasha (hint to readers: when I call people my man on this site, which I think has only applied to my man Nic and now for the first time to my man Sasha, these people have no idea who I am) had a big write up about her, and I preordered the CD, whose release date was pushed back, and the wait seemed interminable, but when it arrived, the hype was matched. Piracy Funds Terrorism was an impressive release as well. And now Kala. Oh and I got to see her at 9:30, with that Baltimore band that's all the rage now. What's their name? Anyway, to the setlist:

ESG: A South Bronx Story. Shout out to JJ.

Robert Miles: Organik. Still good. I remember when this CD was in a lot of people's players.

A mix by a different Nick. Setlist of it: 4 Hero with Jill Scott, Taj Mahal, Captain Beefheart, Cymande, Innerzone Orchestra, Tosca, Jamie, 13th Sign, Greyboy, Eddie Gale, RPM, Cinematic Orchestra, DJ Food (CD actually says "something on Ninja tune records, probably DJ Food), Jazzanova, & Big Black.

The Kinks: Kronikles, Disc 2. I've been on a little Kinks thing lately. Got two old concerts, both great.

Frank Zappa: Lather, Disc 2. Above and here, I've lost the disc ones. Crap. But this disc is pretty much amazing, so no real harm done. Lots of brilliant Frank, and sadly, like many CDs in my collection, I'd never heard this. Actually I'd sort of been saving it. But what happened to disc one? Sad. I have disc three, but continue to save it.

Psyco on da Bus. A classic in the world of good music. I think it's fair to say that anything Tony Allen touches is gold.

The New Pornographers: Electric Version. Does anyone not like this band? They put out good music.

Ok Go! I did not like the album I heard, and promptly had it banished from my collection.

There was some Phish listened to, from the Miami NYE run, 2003. Phish + George Clinton with P-Funk All-Stars, Phish + marching band on Jungle Boogie and Iron Man [quick aside: Is Guitar Hero the greatest game ever? Just started playing, and went for that one as soon as I saw it.], etc. Also part of Trey, set II +E, 3 May 1999. One of my favorite concerts ever, if not number one.

Outcast: Speakerboxx. Perfect? Discuss.

There was some radio.

At the CD store:

Prefuse 73: One Word Extinguisher. Saw him open for Four Tet, and have been a fan since. This is a little hit and miss, but more hit than miss, and the hits can be solid.

Bob Dylan: Live at The Gaslight, 1962. New Dylan is a treat. This point cannot be argued. Facts are stubborn things.

Smoosh. The ladies who opened for The Pipettes. OK.

Soul Coughing: Ruby Vroom. Kickin' it early 90s style. Unfortunately some scratches. What can you do with a 7 day money back guarantee when you're not in the relevant town?

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings. They put on a great show (blew away the Black Cat some time ago, and I imagine will again), but did you know that, minus Ms. Jones, they back Ms. Rehab? That's what I'm told.

Caplan out.
