Stuff
Let's see here. I went to buy tickets to see Yeasayer and MGMT, but they were sold out. I tried again for the next night's show, but it was sold out. Then I looked into tickets for the Gutter Twins, but they were sold out. (On a non-musical note, then I looked for tickets to see Will Ferrell at Radio City, but they were sold out.) So then I went to get tickets to see The Breeders, but that wasn't until June so there wouldn't be a wait a second sold out! No!!!!!!!!!! Well at least I'm going to see Daniel Johnston in DC, so wait a second I have to work in New York that day! No!!!!!!! Good thing he's playing in New York two days earlier so I'll just go to that it's sold out no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You'll be releasing additional tickets day of? Yeah, I'm sure I'll get one of them.
I left work yesterday to try and get a ticket. It was cold. There was a long line. I wasn't feeling too good about my prospects. I was maybe 50th in line. Somebody walks by the line. "Is this the line to get in?" "No," I say, "if you have a ticket you can go right in. This is for people who need tickets." "Oh." The guy walks off to go walk in. Then he comes back over to me, "You need a ticket? I have an extra." Now, I'd been chatting with the guy in front of me in line. There were many, many people in front of me in line. So a bit of an ethical quandry. To which I responded by saying, "I will gladly take that," as I reached for my wallet. Got a ticket for face, ran home to change out of my suit, came back to the venue.
I'd never been to the venue before, Highline Ballroom. It didn't do much for me. The opener was on when I arrived, Spanish Prisoners. They didn't do much for me. Then a break. Then DJ. He came out by himself, and played an unusual guitar for a few songs. Then he brought out a friend from college who played acoustic while DJ just sang. DJ's arms were shaking a la Parkinson's, he was very heavy. You want someone you admire so much to look healthy, and he didn't. They played a few songs and DJ said they were taking a short set break.
When they came back, the opener was DJ's back up band, and the acoustic guy was out for a bit too. More rockin', obviously. DJ tried to play one song not planned, asked the other musicians if they had it and they didn't, but they all said they knew and he said, "Well I don't have the lyrics," so they couldn't play it. Basically, I went to see a genuine artist sing some amazing songs and I was moved by how beautiful of a songwriter he is, but he is not well.
I looked into seeing Jim White after they had a picture of him in this week's New Yorker, but couldn't be convinced based on what I heard. He's on David Byrne's label, so I'm probably wrong.
I bought tickets today to a few shows, one on Saturday (tomorrow). Reports forthcoming, along with the two album reviews I said I'd get to and I will but I've been busy, darn it.
