I'm a lucky man, some of the time
Wednesday November 19th. A day that will live in infamy.
I trust Sasha F-J immensely. He doesn't know who I am, but I'd let him babysit my kids. Recently, he put something up on his blog about Liquid Liquid. Said it was gonna be a once in a lifetime show, or something like that. Who is Liquid Liquid? That's what I thought. I do a tiny bit of homework, and find out they were a New York band, active from 1980-83, broke up, and reformed last month for one show in London. Now they're coming to New York for one more. Strange. That was fairly intriguing. But that's about all I was going on. I convinced two suckers to join me. Pre-party in my (sadly) old hood.
The pre-partying is going great, the three of us laughing immensely, until the subject turns to where we're going. What do you really know about this band? Not much. Is this a rave? Well, I don't know. Oh, I forget to mention: James Murphy is also DJing at this thing! Man I love me some James Murphy. So what can I say? I'm getting quizzed about who we're going to see, and I really can't contribute very much. We're in a cab, and I'm feeling some pressure. What if this thing sucks? I'll have two people pissed off at me. Been there. At least we're trying...
We get there, and the place is packed with a pretty diverse crowd, particularly in terms of age (read: I'm not the oldest guy there). Some DJs are spinning decent disco-esque music, we're having fun. The curtain peels back, and voila! Four dudes, as seen below:
There were some space issues that made things slightly frustrating at times. But aside from that, the music was damn good. Salvation! No one went home mad on the music front. This band impressed us all. The decision to go was a fine idea. Whose idea was it again? Mine! Sort of. But I'm taking credit! Liquid Liquid. Oh, you might know them because they're basically the background music in Melle Mel's most famous song. But you might never get to see them. And I did. 25 years after they were cool, but they're still cool in my book.
Afterwards James Murphy came on, and the night turned into a drunken mess quickly. Usually when that happens, particularly on a weeknight after music, this guy (seen before on this blog encouraging shameless debauchery) is involved:
They had some amusing signs up throughout the venue. This was one of them.
Oh, and this is supposed to be an arty shot of the soundboard:
What else? Vivian Girls, blogged about here first in May, just had a full page article in Spin glowing about them. More on that front later. Oh, Devotchka! They were on Nic's show, and I was reminded of two things: they were featured in Little Miss Sunshine, and I saw them backing a touring burlesque troupe ten years ago, and remember telling everyone how amazing they were, while everyone I told that to couldn't understand why I went to see a burlesque show and could only talk about the backing music. But I was right! So ha!
Finally, a shot from karaoke on Satuday:
Tickets in hand for more stuff! Yeah!
